The short answer: flat views, depth and movement
The difference between 2D, 3D, and 4D ultrasound is how the image is displayed. 2D shows a flat, usually black-and-white view. 3D creates a still image with depth. 4D shows 3D images in motion, so you can watch movement rather than look only at a single frame.
They are different ways to see an ultrasound image—not a ranking of which one confirms more about your baby’s health at an elective appointment. At 4D Sneak Peek in Jackson, Tennessee, our visits are for bonding and keepsakes, separate from your prenatal medical care.

2D ultrasound: a familiar black-and-white view
A 2D view can show a profile or a view of the baby within the scan. It does not have the surface depth of a 3D image, but it can still be a meaningful moment to share.
Our 2D options serve different stages of pregnancy and different visit goals. 2D Little Beginnings is our early session. Baby Update is another 2D option from 14 weeks. We also offer a 2D gender ultrasound from 15 weeks. Open the individual pages to check eligibility and inclusions rather than choosing on the imaging label alone.
3D ultrasound: a still image with depth
A 3D image lets you see the shape of features in a still view. The warm-toned face pictures on our website are examples of this kind of surface image, captured during individual visits.
You may catch the curve of a cheek, a little hand or tiny fingers. What comes into view depends on your baby’s position and the scan conditions—every visit is its own little moment.
4D ultrasound: the added dimension is motion
4D ultrasound is 3D ultrasound in motion. If a movement is visible during the scan, you can watch it as it happens rather than see only a still picture. Our Your Visit page includes 2D, 3D and 4D examples so you can compare them.
For families considering a standard 3D and 4D baby ultrasound session, our studio recommends 30–32 weeks and offers these sessions from 27 weeks. Our timing guide explains that window and how it differs from the early 4D add-on.
What does HDLive mean on the package list?
You may also see HDLive or 5D wording in our package descriptions. Those labels describe the presentation of the images offered in our Classic and Ultimate sessions. They do not mean that an elective appointment diagnoses conditions or replaces a medical scan.
Compare the published package information for practical differences such as appointment length, printed photos and keepsakes. Bomee digital recordings are included in our 4D scans; Bomee is an optional $10 add-on with 2D scans.
Choose the visit that fits your stage and expectations
Start with how far along you are, then read the session details. An early 2D view and a later-pregnancy 4D session offer different experiences. Neither guarantees a particular pose or an unobstructed face.
Our session finder and package list can help you narrow the options. You can also call or text (731) 487-3015 with a question before booking. We would rather help you choose the right appointment than have you arrive expecting something the session does not offer.
